Report cards will be out in a few weeks. Please remember to have your portfolio updated by the last week of October.

To date, your portfolio contents are : (1) personal history timeline (2) neighbourhood map (3) culminating task (with class work and guiding questions)

In the next couple of weeks you will also be given a quiz on the Loyalists and Irish settlers in Quebec

History 404-55 and 56 you will be having a test on Module 1 Monday 22nd of September.

History 404-07 and 08 - your neigbourhood map assignments are due on Monday 22nd September. Please remember to follow the method listed on page 291 of the Panoramas textbook.

In the next little while, we will be looking at the First Nations and Early Settlement of New France.

The Books Have Arrived!

Our new textbooks have finally arrived! We will be using them in class only.

Meet the Teacher Night is Thursday, September 18th from 5:3008:30 pm.
We will be reviewing the course outline of the new curriculum and topics of study as well as the new evaluation and reporting system.

In the next few weeks we will be studying interpreting and creating maps. The first theme of study is population and settlement and we will begin by studying the First Nations.

Please make sure to submit your assignments on time; the most recent assignments were the document template and reflection questions, personal timeline, and maps.

History and Citizenship of Quebec and Canada....Old Curriculum Meets New!

Hello everyone. This is where I will post assignments, quizzes, tests etc....I will also include resources for the course and other interesting tidbits. We may even consider posting some of your work here.

This year, I have two classes that will be completing the old curriculum and two classes starting with the new curriculum. The new course looks very interesting and I am sure we can do many different activities.

Exam Information

The History 414 exam is June 16th at 9 am in the Large Gym.

Please bring at least two HB Pencils and an eraser to the exam.

The exam is 2.5 hours long, which means you must remain in the exam for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The exam will consist of 20 (/60) multiple choice questions, 8 (/24) short answer questions, and 1 (/16) essay question. (Total: /100). Your class mark accounts for 50% of the year and your exam mark accounts for 50% of the year.

You will be seated by group/section so please know your group number. Your multiple choice answer sheet will already have your name on it. The short answer and essay answer sheets will need to be removed from the middle of your exam booklet.

Tips:

(1) do not change an answer on the multiple choice section unless you are absolutely certain you initially answered incorrectly.
(2) if you do change an answer, make sure to erase your initial answer completely and as well as possible
(3) remember that the multiple choice questions are chronological i.e. they go through the modules in order. You may be able to find answers or information for later questions in the early questions of the exam
(4) use process of eliminiation on multiple choice questions, this process will increase your chances of getting the question correct
(5) remember to look at what is required on short answer questions to get full marks. This information will be provided as a "note" at the end of the question
(6) complete the outline (document section), rough copy and good copy of the essay
(7) use the documents to your advantage - remember to read the titles of photos or images, graphs and charts for information to help you answer the question, use the information from graphs and charts
(8) when looking at a picture or image document, note what is in the foreground, middleground, and background of the image
(9) Make sure you know what the question is asking you to complete i.e. choose documents, write an explanation, or identify/name an event
(10) Never leave an answer blank! You always have a 25% chance of getting a multiple choice question correct!

You will receive your final mark from the Ministry of Education in the mail about the third week of July. This mark represents your blended class and exam mark as well as any moderation.

The mark you receive on your report card only represents your class mark.

Final Exam in One Month!

The History 414 final exam is June 16th at 9 am.

We are currently finishing Module 7 of the course - contemporary Quebec.

You will have a couple of quizzes and assignments to complete in this module. In addition, you will have an essay.

When we have finished the content for the course, you will do some review and then practice some old exams (2-3). Whichever old exam you get the best mark on will be recorded for your term 4 evaluation.

Remember, your class mark accounts for 50% of the course and your exam mark accounts for 50%.

Images of the Great Depression

We will be studying the Great Depression for a few classes. Many images of this hard time were taken. One of the most famous, from the United States, was taken by one of a group of photographers hired by the U.S. Federal government to document the impact the Depression had on people. You can view all of these images online at the U.S. Library of Congress website. This is one of my favourite images because of the emotion it evokes. Every time I look at it, I wonder what is going through her mind. She must be so worried about her children.

Image of the Day - Confederation Decisions Cartoon

The Confederation of Canada was a hotly debated topic. Some British North American colonies were afraid of joining Confederation and being dominated by larger colonies/provinces. There was much debate of how to organize the government; some fathers of Confederation believed that a legislative union with a powerful central government was the answer. Others believed that a federal union with provincial and local governments was a better solution. Some people were afraid that the United States would try and take over all of North America with their policy of Manifest Destiny. There were numerous reasons why the British North American Colonies considered forming an independent country.

Take a look at this political cartoon of George Brown. What does the cartoon imply? How was confederation a balancing act? What is annexation?

Remember, you must be able to analyze images and documents for the final exam in June. Always look at the foreground, middleground, and background of an image and read any text that may give you a clue to answer the question.

Government Structures Assignment Due Dates

Remember, you need to draw and label the structures for:

1) Royal Government
2) Royal Proclamation
3) Constitutional Act
4) Act of Union
5) Responsible Government
6) British North America Act

You must also include two pieces of information about this structure. The information is of your choice; include what you feel is important or significant to understanding the particular structure and the time period in which it occurred.

Please submit your rubric with your assignment for evaluation.

Assignments and March Break

Please ensure your Module 4 test review question and your ranking ladder assignment are submitted before March break.

You have the Leading to Confederation worksheet , with the timeline, definitions, and map to complete and get a stamp as well. You will have a binder check after March break and I will be looking for the stamped completed assignments as part of the binder evaluation.

About a week after the March break, there will be a quiz on the topics we have covered in Module 5.

Unfortunately, the field trip to the Library and Archives of Canada for Black History Month had to be cancelled. However, I would like to organize a trip to either the War Museum or the Museum of Civilization before May.

The History 414 exam is January 31st at 9:00 am in the large gym. Please be prepared and arrive with a pen, pencil, and eraser.

Know your group number as this will determine where you sit for the exam:

01 = orange
02= yellow
03= green
11= blue
12=purple

The exam is 2.5 hours long. You must remain for half the alloted time (1 hour and 15 minutes).

For review:

(1) review the flowcharts at the end of each module in your workbook
(2) review your class notes
(3) go to the Lester B Pearson history 414 site (notes, quizzes and tests)
(4) go to www.learnquebec.ca ...if you do not have a username and password get one from the guidance department (powerpoint presentations, quizzes, tests, and notes)
(5) borrow a review book and practice old exam questions
(6) come visit Ms. Manweiler and she will help you! If the door is open you are welcome to come in.

The Exam Approaches!

Good luck to everyone writing the History 414 Supplemental on Thursday. Remember to bring an hb pencil for the multiple choice portion of the exam!

Homework: All classes please make sure to submit your module 4 quiz worksheet (it is not a quiz for you rather it is for homework marks.)

Next Few Classes: We will be reviewing topics from each module for the exam January 31st. We will also be reviewing how to do an essay question for the exam. It is very important that you attend to get help if you need it to prepare for the exam.

Extra Help: I will be in my room Wednesday the 16th and Thursday the 17th at lunch if you would like to get some extra help, study etc...Any other time, if my door is open, you are welcome to come in.

Reminders: Please be prepared for class - pen/pencil, paper, workbook!

Hello everyone! I am very happy to share this new resource with you. I will be moving over files and powerpoint presentations from my old wikispaces page to here. Please use this as a resource to study, check up on what you may have missed in class, and look to see when major assignments, quizzes and tests will be. I will also include resource websites for you. I will also post images in the blog that apply to our course and that may be used on the exam.
